Selma to Montgomery
Civil Rights Commemoration Ride
"Bloody Sunday"
March 7, 1965

This history making Ride is scheduled to be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009. Proceeds from the Ride will go to the ASU Scholarship Fund and the University's National Center for the Study of Civil Rights.

12:00 PM - Registration at host hotel.

7:00 PM - Meet and Greet with the Buffalo Soldiers and members of the ASU Staff

Saturday, February 14, 2009

7:00 AM – 8:30 AM - Early registration.

8:30 AM – Bikers form for the start of the ride. Riders will be led over the back roads from Montgomery to Selma. Riders will make several stops along the 54 mile route to be briefed on the actual occurrences that took place at those sites.

9:30 AM – Bikers arrive at Brown Chapel A.M.E. church in Selma for a short program. This was the
starting point of the 1965 March

10:15 AM – Riders arrive at Edmund Pettus Bridge and pause for a moment of prayer for the fallen civil rights activists. It was at this site on March 7, 1965 that non-violent marchers were tear-gassed, beaten with billy clubs, and stopped by law enforcement officers. This event became known as “Bloody Sunday”.

11: AM – Riders will arrive at the Lowndes County Interpretative Center

12:15 PM – Riders depart Interpretative Center and travel the exact marchers route to the State Capitol in Montgomery

12:30 PM – Arrive at State Capitol for a Civil Rights Program to include:

  • Introduction of and greetings from ASU Faculty
  • Invocation
  • Solo
  • Speech by Reverend Boone
  • Recital of Dr. King’s speech at the Capitol
  • “We shall overcome”

1:15 PM – Riders will walk to Oak Park for lunch by going through ASU campus

7:30 PM – Attendees will enjoy a special Valentines presentation (Ladies) cocktails, dinner, guest speaker and dancing.
